Bill Wurtzel is a visual artist who uses healthy food as his medium. He is also a professional jazz guitarist, so improvising even with food comes naturally. Bill was honored by the JCC Manhattan’s Wechsler Center and FORWARD. Bill had a career as a creative director and has won countless advertising and graphic design awards awards including World's Best TV Commercials. Bill and his wife Claire, a renowned educator, have authored 6 books: "Funny Food", a Best Children's Book of 2012, and "Funny Food Made Easy" (Rizzoli). "Foodie Faces", uses food art to express children's feelings (Little Brown). "Meshuggah Food Faces" brings lightness to a crazy world. (Behrman House). “In Our Teeny Tiny Matzah House” is a Passover seder story (Behrman House). It is a PJ Library selection for 2023.
Bill and Claire have done workshops for thousands of children and families that make it fun to learn about nutrition. Bill's Funny Food Art has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and abroad. Bill is a director of the Jazz Foundation of America.
Claire Wurtzel has been an educator for over 40 years, helping teachers work effectively with students who struggle with learning and/or behavior challenges. Claire was on the faculty of the American Museum of Natural History as well as Bank Street Graduate School, where she taught and chaired the Department of Special Education. Claire also worked with administrators, parents, psychologists, librarians, and museum educators, and continues to train teachers both nationally and internationally.
