If they make it, they’ll eat it
Getting kids to try new healthy foods can be tough. When Bill and I do Funny Food workshops (using only nutritious food) when kids make a healthy snack they are willing to eat it and they try foods they never tasted before.
On a Sunday when you have more time, work together to make funny, silly food creations that are healthy. Stock up on ingredients in the five food groups recommended by ChooseMyPlate.gov: Vegetables, Fruits, Protein, Grains, and Dairy. Having these nutritious foods in the kitchen makes it easier to win the kids over. When the children see only nourishing food in the kitchen they will try it. Sometimes it takes many tries to acquire a taste for new foods.
You might want to use our new book, “Funny Food Made Easy” for inspiration or follow the step-by-step photos of breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
Let your kids’ imagination be their guide. So what if they make a face with one eye or a penguin with four legs. If they are using healthy ingredients and having fun they will, no doubt, eat what they make.
Here are a few simple steps to make a silly, healthy, delicious egg breakfast that kids love.
1. Two cuts and whole wheat bread has arms.
2. A scrambled egg makes a great head and now the bread has a head on its shoulders.
3. A cheese nose, berry ears, olive eyes, and a parsley-do, do the trick.
4. Strawberry lips say it all…fun, healthy and delicious!
If your child is still reluctant to try the new food have a small piece of a favorite food nearby and assure them that if they don’t like the new food they can follow it with an old favorite. It takes a few tries to expand their palette.
